St. Paul Lutheran Church Originations
Early years of the church congregation and church foundation

1908

  • January - Rev. August Falkenberg of Quihi is authorized to help start a mission in Hondo
  • August 23 - 22 sign the membership list to charter St. Paul Lutheran Church
  • Worship is held at the County Courthouse, then at the Methodist Church building

1910

  • Construction of a church building begins

1911

  • September 2 - The church building is completed at a cost of $3,345.26

Early congregation and continual growth in the Hondo community

1922

  • April - Rev. Falkenberg retires
  • April - Rev. G.E. Grueber is called as Pastor
  • May - The congregation votes to hold two services per month in English
  • May - Sunday School is also taught in English

1923

  • October 28 - The church parsonage is completed and dedicated

1924

  • October - The Luther League is organized

1926

  • Rev. Grueber resigns

1927

  • Rev. H.A. Heineke accepts the call
  • The choir is organized
  • Individual cups replace the common cup at communion

1931

  • August 4 - Rev. Heineke is succeeded by Rev. Walker C. Leibfarth

1932

  • The first Vacation Bible School is held

St. Paul Lutheran Church reaches a new milestone

1933

  • Ausgust 18 - St. Paul celebrates its 25th anniversary

1935

  •  American Lutheran Church constitution adopted

1938

  • Rev. Leibfarth is succeeded by Rev. Paul Czerkus

1942

  • June - Rev. Grueber resigns Czerkus is succeeded by Rev. M.J. Lorfing
The Church Expands and Celebrates 50
St. Paul Lutheran Church adds more to the church and continues on through the 50-year milestone

1948

  • June 12 - The church Annex and an addition to the Sanctuary are dedicated

1953-1958

  • Rev. Konrad Eindecker succeeds Rev. Lorfing
  • A Hammond Organ is purchased
  • A Brotherhood is started
  • German services are discontinued
  • July 5 - Rev. Robert H. Pfennig is installed as Pastor following Rev. Eindecker's death
  • Ausgust 24 - St. Paul celebrates its 50th anniversary

1959

  • December 23 - The Educational Building is built and dedicated

1964

  • December 13 - The Youth Building is dedicated
The Church Continues Through 75-year Milestone
St. Paul Lutheran Church continues on through the 75-year milestone

1965

  • Rev. James Neffendorf succeeds Rev. Pfennig

1967

  • August 6 - Rev. August Hanneman is installed as Pastor

1968

  • The church buildings are air conditioned

1970

  • A new parsonage is built and dedicated on 28th Street

1975

  • March - Rev. Ervie Braun is called as Pastor

1979

  • February 4 - Dedication is held for renovated sanctuary, including stained glass windows

1983

  • August 21 - St. Paul celebrates its 75th Anniversary
Celebrating 100 Years of Ministry
Built on a firm foundation, St. Paul Lutheran Church continues on through the 100-year milestone

1987

  • Rev. Lue Bouman is installed as Pastor

1993

  • Rev. Gary Lange is installed as Pastor
  • Activity Center is built and dedicated

1999

  • Rev. David J. Mayer is installed as Pastor

2006

  • St. Paul transitioned from ELCA to the LCMC synod

2008

  • St. Paul celebrates its 100th Anniversary
Continuing the Mission for Christ
With the Mission for Christ in mind, St. Paul Lutheran Church grows the congregation and church family

2016

  • Legacy Life Building completed and dedicated

2018

  • 110th Church Anniversary

2019

  • Beverly Kelling is installed as Pastor

2020

  • Activity Center is renovated

2023

  • August - St. Paul celebrates its 115th Anniversary
  • August - Renovation of the Church Sanctuary and Annex is completed
